There has been much debate recently about citizens of western countries going abroad to fight for organizations like al Qaeda or IS/ISIL or whatever they are calling themselves this week.
What could motivate these individuals to take up arms against the very countries that made them welcome…….many people ask?
The simple answer is………… Why wouldn’t they?
What possible reason have we given to these people, to have any pride in the countries in which they live.
What loyalty or fellow feeling could they possibly possess for a country that they have been told is fundamentally evil.
They have been told, from the moment of their arrival or the start of the lives if they were born here, that they live in a society that is profoundly and uniquely racist.
That oppresses women and denies equality to gays and other minorities.
The message is repeated and repeated again in a hundred different permutations.
And it is delivered by the cultural elites of the very society that these people are expected to respect.
The Mullahs and Jihadists who speak in a similar vein are just reinforcing to the Muslim mind what we already say about ourselves.
To the followers of a religion that objectively differentiates between believers and infidels, between the West and the East, this is a toxic mix.
That our societies are imperfect, that we have made mistakes, is beyond refute. The criticism however is ubiquitous and delivered entirely devoid of context.
They are told of the evils of slavery or colonization but no mention is made that throughout much of human history slavery was the default position for nearly all human civilizations. Or that it was the West, alone amongst those civilizations that sought to end it.
They are told that the oppression of women in our societies is endemic but no example of the treatment of women in other cultures is offered.
Why do we suppose that these individuals would take the time to objectively compare their culture to ours when we are seemingly incapable of doing it ourselves.
The cultural elites of our societies have done not just a great disservice to our immigrant populations but something verging on actual abuse.
By denying an individual a history, a culture and a country that they can be proud to be a part of.
We have effectively driven them into the arms of those that can offer them an identity they can accept.
It’s time and time well past that we stop this cultural self-loathing and rediscover the truth of Western Civilization manifest successes.
To fail to do so is to see more and more of our citizens posing in pictures that depict bloody horrors.
